RECAP: Lake Istokpoga

The South Region’s third event of the 2026 Florida Bass Nation Kayak Series brought 41 anglers from across Florida to Lake Istokpoga on January 3rd, on another one of the state’s most storied big-bass fisheries.

Brian Nelli wins Lake Istokpoga

The Istokpoga event marked a pivotal stop in the South Region schedule as competitors battled for crucial AOY points under challenging post-front conditions.

Anglers faced challenging conditions as a cold front lingered for several days leading into the event, slowing the overall bite. Persistent wind throughout the day further complicated kayak control and positioning, especially in open-water areas on the north end of Lake Istokpoga, forcing competitors to carefully manage their areas and head to protected water when possible. While Istokpoga is known for producing giants, many anglers reported having to grind for quality fish under the combined pressure of post-front conditions and wind.

Brian Nelli emerged victorious with a winning total of 94.75 inches, securing the win by three inches over Seth Taylor. The victory marked a strong statement for Nelli, who finished second in the South Region season opener on the Harris Chain of Lakes on November 1st, 12th on Walk-in-Water/Arbuckle and now converts that momentum into a South Region win at Istokpoga. Taylor’s runner-up finish came with 91.75 inches, followed by Richard White III in third with 83.25 inches.

With the win, Nelli now leads the South Region Angler of the Year standings with 864 points, extending his advantage over Chris Mitchell (829 points) in second place and Blake Abbey (805 points) in third as the season reaches its midpoint in February.

Across all anglers bags, the average fish measured 15.73 inches.

The South Region returns to action on February 7th at Lake Kissimmee, where the event will run in conjunction with the Bassmaster Kayak Series stop on the same body of water. Anglers will have the opportunity to register for both events and compete simultaneously, making the Kissimmee stop a pivotal and high-stakes weekend for AOY points and national-level competition.
